241 is not 414: Fixing my Backups

My Lightroom library currently contains 97,590 images. Initially, 414 of them were rated at 3 stars and above, and those are ones I want backed up to the cloud. However, my backup strategy was only going to include 241 of those images, so this wasn’t just a counting error: something, somewhere, was seriously wrong.

The Punkfish Interviews

The interviews were just supposed to give me some soundbites. They turned out so well, the plan changed…

BTS with Punkfish Diving

A few stills and a clip from the Punkfish day-in-the-life shoot – the interview footage is still being edited, but life at the dive centre is so colourful it deserves a shout.

A short clip from Malpique, mostly an excuse to play with colour and ambient audio in Premiere rather than a proper edit.

A trip to London with Potter House Interiors

I took the Z50ii video rig to London on a trip with Potter House Interiors to the Chelsea Design Centre – it wasn’t really a job, but a useful first test of the setup. Lots of useful lessons…

I love these kind of shots where the long exposure smooths out the water and makes everything look calm and pristine. Also, the ferries coming in and out made for some Bob-Ross-esque happy little accidents (swipe to the second photo).

This felt like being back at university: writing papers with limited knowledge and hard deadlines. Main difference: I’m a bit older, used to writing things, and my layout skills are so much better than 20 years ago. Writing the business plan gave me a lot more clarity of where SB|S is heading, what the market looks like, and what my turnover needs to be. I’m cautiously optimistic.

I like slow travel – where possible. Being at sea is calming, the fresh air and wind clears my mind and allows me to switch off for a bit. Trains, not so much, but trains are definitely preferable to the hell on earth that is the M6 in rush hour.

Taking time to do some sightseeing should never be overlooked. I’ve spent so much time on projects in (or simply just traveling through) the Netherlands, but never really stopped to see some of the country.

Taking random turns down interesting-looking streets in London sometimes gets you lost, and sometimes allows you to discover some fantastic places.

The main reason to go to Amsterdam: @ibcshow. A good opportunity to catch up with friends and colleagues from the industry, and do some networking and discussing future work.

In addition to all the software and systems, it was also nice to see all of the other wonderful technology that surrounds broadcast.

Visiting new or different places offers opportunity to add to portfolio work. The EYE film museum is a fantastic contemporary building on the banks of the Ij, and it was great to play with the lines and lights of the building in contrast with the water.

More portfolio work taking me out of my comfort zone, getting to grips with new techniques and rediscovering old buildings.

  • Last week, I sat down with Angie & Vero from @punkfishdiving for a bilingual chat about their quirky dive centre and the diving on La Palma.

@j0_parsons reached out a few weeks ago. She's starting a fitness transformation journey, and wanted authentic, honest "before" photos that she can also use for her therapy business, Thought Health.

We spent a good hour or so at Llyn Elsi making photos in glorious afternoon sunlight with a lot of laughter.

@hollypotterdesign kindly offered to assist with lighting.
